Tablelands Regional Council renewed its long-standing relationship with Atherton and District Animal Welfare Society at their May ordinary Council meeting.
‘We’ve previously provided $5000/year to the society so they can subsidise desexing and microchipping of dogs and cats in our community,’ said Councillor Dave Bilney.
‘Supporting this program means fewer resources are spent on unwanted pets and on wandering and missing animals.
‘It’s not just a financial arrangement — it’s also about animal welfare.
‘This financial year the society has already provided $49,700 in vouchers for subsidies to the community, which is a substantial amount of money for this hardworking volunteer organisation that raises its money through their second-hand store and other fundraising activities.
‘This year we’ve increased the amount to $6000 and will establish a memorandum of understanding with the society committing to this level of funding for three years,’ said Councillor Bilney.
